Torqu-E-Cycles shop front

A passion for technology, cycling and a growing demand for Scott’s expertise led to the beginnings of the brilliantly named Torqu-E-Cycles. Part of our Devon dealer network the shop has built on an exceptional reputation to become Torquay’s go-to on anything electric bike-related. Here’s all you need to know in our latest Dealer Spotlight…

Torqu-E-Cycles in the Spotlight

1. What motivated you to open a bike shop?

Coming from a background in electronics and a passion for riding, I remember the day I first saw an ebike come in for repair, at the time I had an electronics repair shop on the 2nd floor of a building so it was interesting to say the least!

After the word spread and I was spending more time lugging bikes up and down stairs I decided to take the plunge and change business, to open Torqu-E-Cycles… I have NEVER looked back, I love this trade and the people associated with it.

I have never had a Volt battery in for repair (battery repairs are 95% of what we do here)

2. What initially inspired you to become a VOLT E-bikes Dealer?

First setting my eyes on a Volt bike happened when a customer came in for a service. The ebike had covered around 4000 miles and asides from some standard wear and tear was in fantastic condition, couple this with the fact I have never had a Volt battery in for repair (battery repairs are 95% of what we do here), made me quickly realise this is a company I want to be involved with. An interesting phone call to the team later and the rest is history.

3. What is the funniest/strangest request you have had from a customer?

“Is it possible to modify a Metro LS so it can be split in half and used as an electric unicycle?” ….The customer was actually being serious!

4. Tell us about a favourite local cycling adventure? Or your favourite local cycling route?

Here in Torquay we are very lucky to have beautiful sea views surrounding the town, with cycle paths following them all of which are fantastic, however I grew up in the New Forest so my heart and cycling passion will always remain on the 200+ miles of light duty cycle paths/ tracks (usually between one pub and another!)

5. What’s your favourite electric bike and why?

For me it has to be the Alpine, the torque-sensing bottom bracket makes rideability from a standing start a breeze. Coupled with all the other creature comforts Volt supply as standard makes this my perfect electric cycle for riding on the local coastal paths, or venturing back to the New Forest for our yearly cycling holiday.

6. What are your top tips for anyone thinking of buying an electric bike?

1, Speak to the team, they are by far the friendliest bunch I have had the pleasure to deal with in this trade.

2, Don’t be afraid to book a test ride, you will quickly realise why Volt bikes are far superior to any other competing brands.

3, Buy the extra chain lock to work with the rear wheel lock, it’s a game changer!

4, IF you HAVE to buy a bike made by another company, make sure they will provide a UK based 2 year warranty, if it isn’t UK-based, be prepared for very long delays should anything go wrong, this is another major advantage in Volt’s favour, the warranty is fantastic and very quick to resolve any issues that may arise.

7. What is your favourite poison?

Beer!

8. What’s the best way for Torquay customers to find you?

We are at the other end of the phone for any questions you have, always happy to assist! We are on Facebook and Instagram Torqu-E-Cycles, but ultimately the best way is to pop in for a chat and check the bikes out for yourself!

9. What can they expect?

It is as simple as walking through the front door and ask for Scott, we have a local park which is great for test rides, Babbacombe Downs has the sea views which are great for the coffee/snack break before/between/after making your decision which of the Volt bikes you love the best!
