What Riders Say About the VOLT Connect

The Volt Connect has revitalized my life post-retirement, allowing me to accumulate many miles. Riding it is a pleasure, and the pedal assist makes tackling hills delightful. I acquired a demo bike, and I'm thoroughly satisfied with this smooth buying experience.
On a previous review I scored volt bikes 4 and would have liked to score them 4.5 so here is a 5 star review to make it so. This review revolves around the continuing pleasure I am getting from my Volt Connect bike and the range I can get from a single battery charge. I am now retired 66, and around 101 kg, trying hard to reduce this. Recently on 3 outings I covered 62.5 miles on one battery charge with 7% left in reserve. I used the 1st level of assistance (E) only, 100% of the time. My fitbit recorded 5460 ft of elevation and bike, rider and panier bag filled with essentials weighed in at 129 kg. I thought that was pretty good. These rides were workouts rather than leisurely longer days out. However I would be confident of completing 50+ miles using all levels of assistance if necessary on one battery charge without the fear of running dry.
Mark from Sinclair Cycles Kinross delivered my Volt Connect to my door 1st week in July. I had previously been to his shop and test ridden three models. I was thoroughly impressed with his service and decided to buy that day getting straight onto the Volt website. I have now had the bike 2 months and have done close to 900 km, it's had its initial tune up and is running brilliantly. I do like the way the power is applied from the motor in the crank. It just feels right. I would have liked to score the bike 4.5 rather than 4. A few gripes, I like to use the bell a lot and the bell supplied is a bit puny. I have also swapped out the seat for one with more padding. I too, like a gentleman mentioned in a previous review, catch my heel on the stand when in the stowed position. I would have quite liked one more higher gear too. Range I believe is good. I recently covered 37 miles with 2453 ft of climbing, burning 2125 cals, some of it on gravel trails. I am also not light at 16 stone and by the end my battery reading was 34 %, so 2/3 rds used. I was pleased with that and should have been able to complete just over 50 miles without running the battery right down.
The Volt Connect has given me a new lease of life; following retirement, I'm clocking up the miles. A joy to ride and the pedal assist a treat on the hills. I bought an ex display/demo bike and really happy with my purchase - seamless from start to finish.
volt connect, what a great bike. delivered to local bike shop and took through all aspects of bike. nifty little allen key set, but missing the size for adjusting the saddle. this may be because it requires a certain torque. to have 2 types of lock is great and gives extra piece of mind when out and about. range of the volt connect is great. friends have seen the bike and are looking at the range of volt electric bikes. definitely a company i would recommend.
I have owned my volt connect for 17 months and cycled 4000 miles in all weathers commuting every day. It has proved reliable, it's been serviced regularly to volts schedule. It's had two sets of brake pads, one chain and the cassette replaced during this time. I usually get between 50 and 70 miles on a charge depending on power assistance used. The motor bearings have started to develop play in them resulting an annoying clacking noise. They will need changing soon I think, although I'm not sure whether it would a warranty thing or just fair wear and tear. One not so good point was the manual for the bike, didn't actually include the instructions for the bike. Overall I'm very pleased with my bike and would recommend volt bikes. Thanks for all of little Steve's help at portsmouth cycle exchange with my bike over the last year or so. One thing it could do with is a chain guard.
Been on holiday for a week. 1st day back on second ever ride on my volt connect did just under 30 miles still got 2 bars on battery. Not bad for a 72 year old overweight man. Thank you volt
Great product. Really well made and a lovely comfortable ride. Customer service is great. I did have a couple of queries, and emails were answered quickly and helpfully. Would highly recommend both the product and the buying experience
Very much enjoying the new Connect with integrated battery. The usual very reliable high spec features and a very comfortable ride. Ordered and delivered to local dealer within a week.
Volt Connect 2021 – Overall impressions is this is a great e-bike with one caveat (see the end of the review). Comfortable to ride, smooth with the power assistance, eases the effort going uphill, works well on both road and gravel surfaces, nice brakes and suspension, and easy to remove battery for charging in the house. The Shimano STEPS motor is very quiet, but not completely silent at the higher levels of assist. I had to get used to ensuring it was in the right gear when stopping otherwise first half crank turn when setting off felt wrong. Volt were really helpful and Leith cycles were also helpful and friendly. Couldn’t ask for better.
Integrated lights, mudguards and pannier rack, a removable LCD display/control unit (but no case although easily solved using a laser pointer case), an integrated rear wheel lock and an optional chain working from the same key as the battery were all nice touches. The disappointment is that the chain was not on the Sold Secure Gold list (it was on the gold list for the Volt linked insurer). A small detail was a bell that was too feeble, but easily replaced.
City ride is great, but only after having Volt/Shimano reset the software. The Connect seemed not to have the same absolute level of assist going uphill as another eBike I’d ridden, but this turned out to be its speed (and distance) reading about 5% too high causing the power assist to cut-off slightly before the 15.5 mph limit. Leith Cycles/Volt were great and sorted out its calibration (wrong wheel size?). Countryside ride (Pentlands), including gravel section (Threipmuir Reservoir to Loganlea Reservoir via Greencleugh when dry), was no problem.
Touring was a bit mixed. Day 1: Edinburgh to Eyemouth the battery gave out after 43 miles on the steepest hill of the day with 8 miles still to go – good job bike rode well without power. Mostly used Eco or no assist prior to that. Weight not too extreme (13.5 stone male, two rear panniers but no tent or cooking equipment). It was a surprise because the indicator on the battery had only recently gone down from two to one bar. The one on the controller consistently reduced the number of bars far earlier and that was what seemed to matter. Not sure if the programming was protecting from full discharge or heavy load when low or something else.
Day 2: Eyemouth to Alnmouth (Coast-and-Castles route) and range anxiety. Would have liked to adjust assist level thresholds and strengths to manage battery life, but Volt’s controller software does not allow user to do that. Conserved power (off when low incline, flat or downhill) and made 49 miles with some to spare, but felt it. Days 3-5: Across the Scottish Borders back to Edinburgh without working too hard to conserve power, but only just made the 41 miles leg from Coldstream to Innerleithen with a few miles left on Eco mode. Apart from battery management challenge, bike worked great and ride was comfortable.
So a great bike for City and countryside, and tours of 35-40 miles on terrain without too many steep sections to drain the battery, but too many battery challenges for me for tour legs of 40-55 miles. In my view, the software needs some tweaks and more flexibility for user configuration. Would I do Coast-to-Coast on the Volt Connect? Only with a spare battery.
Added Note: Shimano offer e-Tube project with an Android app which allows selection between two power assist profiles Comfort and Sportive - mine was factory set to Sportive which provides more assist and so probably uses more battery ....
Ordered 2 volt bikes from Broadribb Banbury in February and they arrived 2 weeks ago a few weeks later than expected but was delighted with the product Broadribb were excellent in providing full information and expect to continue using them for service etc
Super happy with my Volt Connect. Great bike, first class design and build quality, with very well specified components throughout. Volt kept in touch with me between my order placement and receipt of the bike. Cycled over 150 km in the first week over hills and distances that have pleasantly surprised me. Can't speak highly enough of my experience and I have another Volt bike on order for my wife.
We ordered our bikes directly online with Volt during the lockdown when it wasn't really possible to have a test ride but safe to say since our bikes have been delivered we haven't been disappointed!
I have just had my Volt Connect for a week, but feeling very positive so far. Operation is very simple and intuitive and build standard seems extremely high.
I waited about 5 months for my Volt Connect due to Covid and perhaps Brexit delays but it was worth the wait. I wanted a non Chinese made bike and the Volt Connect a British made bike ticked all the right boxes. The actual bike is no disappointment. It is well made and equipped. It's a joy to ride.
I would have given a faultless 5 star review but delivery to my home was not first class. The bike was delivered in a huge cardboard box obviously too heavy and cumbersome for just by one person to carry. To avoid the box being dragged across the road I had to assist the delivery man by taking one end of the box. In addition the delivery company didn't provide any notification about what time of day the delivery would be
What do I like about this bike? I bought it to be able to get up the local hills without straining, and it does that. Also. I can pull away from traffic lights and stop streets at a decent speed to keep up with the traffic. Once you are used to it, the combination of electric motor and gears make hill-climbing a breeze. This bike also pedals like an ordinary bike (although a bit heavier) without the motor assist. You can put as much effort into cycling as you want and this extends its range. The bike computer tells you your range in each of the three levels of assistance, and how far and how fast you have travelled. The distance and other features can be re-set using the function keys. I was impressed with the build of the bike. There is more attention to detail than I had expected. Most features are adjustable, if you have the right allen key, which is my one gripe. Volt should include a full set of allen keys to fit each of the screws. All in all, it is a pleasure to ride. You get the feeling of a traditional bike, with the excitement of an electric motor to raise your spirits. "Further and Faster" seems to be the motto of ebikes. I bought my Volt Connect from The Bike Shed in Margate, and found them very helpful.
Am so pleased with my Volt Connect - have done 500 miles already and repeated lots of my old, tough routes which I could not manage on previous manual bike.
I've just bought a Connect and am delighted. Build quality is excellent, the bike a joy to ride. I use it in mid-Wales where hills are long, steep and bumpy and am particularly pleased with the combination of the 8-speed gears and battery power settings which give real flexibility according to how much effort I put in to riding. I am 69 and reasonably fit, but without battery assistance I couldn't reach the beautiful, hard-to-reach places I'm now enjoying.
Great service from Volt, who gave a lot of helpful advice on which bike would suit me.
Ordered on line directly from Volt and the bike was delivered to my local bike shop who were Volt agents within 2 working days for assembly. Very pleased with the bike. High quality components and specifications throughout and very pleasing to the eye. 3 power levels and 8 gears help make this a very comfortable ride, and having had previous e-bike experiences, i find this bike surprisingly lightweight.Would highly recommend this bike to anyone considering the e-bike experience.
I bought a VOLT CONNECT electric bike last March from our local dealer. It is a beautifully constructed machine, and a real pleasure to ride whether you are using the power or not! My wife and I - she bought a PULSE - have since cycled round our lanes in Somerset, up in the Yorkshire Dales where you can get up really high with no problem, which is superb for birdwatching ... seeing curlews and lapwings ... and in some of the big river valleys in France. I have now done nearly a thousand miles, and it has performed superbly. It is both sturdy and yet it never feels sluggish or heavy and the power of the Shimano Steps motor makes even the steepest of hills almost effortless. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Henry Forbes.
Lovely bike. Delivered to a neighbour, efficiently and on time. However, the setting up of the bike is not quite as intuitive as I might have wanted, particularly the digital display system. Instructions not very specific, and appears on page 35 of the Shimano Speed web manual.... So, a little more work to do there.
I was allowed to have a trial on a Volt Connect. E bike and immediately new I would be buying one. I previously rode my 7 year old Specialized Crosstrail and found this Volt bike to be similar in many ways but with the added benefit of electric Power when required. I would add that I find the Shimano STEPS system 1st class.
Absolutely love my VOLT Connect; I've had it a month and already done almost 600 miles. I have arthritis in my knees, and this summer I thought I was going to have to quit cycling altogether, but with this bike, I can go as far as I want to, pain-free. It's literally life-changing. Great support from the company in response to a tech question, too.
Great service, fantastic bike - I love it. Have cycled more in my first three weeks than I had in more than three years. High quality build and components. Just one quibble - where do I put my drinks bottle? Or is it assumed that with assistance I won't get tired or hot enough to need a drink!
Our crank drive do-it-all model, the Connect will let you explore further and wider. Equipped with 9-speed Shimano Alivio gears, Bafang M210 Crank Drive motor, SR Suntour lockout Suspension and Schwalbe hybrid kevlar-lined tyres, the Connect will keep you going for miles over a variety of terrains.
The Bafang M210 motor is one of the most advanced crank driven electric motors on the market today. This system reads information about how you are riding and delivers power appropriately in real-time, resulting in a ride that feels completely natural. The motor will read information such as the torque exerted on the cranks when the user pedals, the gradient and speed. It will then calculate how much power the motor should produce to supplement the rider’s pedaling.
The gears on the Connect are produced by esteemed manufacturer, Shimano. It also features hydraulic disc brakes from Tektro that enable highly responsive stopping power in all conditions. The Shimano Alivio 9 speed gears and premium derailleur system provides smooth gear changes with a push or pull of the handlebar mounted levers.
All components throughout this electric bike are selected for quality, including Kevlar strengthened tyres from Schwalbe. Even the mudguards have been chosen for their strength and flexibility from German manufacturer, SKS. The X1 suspension forks absorb the effects of rough or bumpy terrain with ease, providing a smooth and comfortable ride. The Spanninga LED lights ensure you will be seen on the roads and can be controlled from the control screen on the handlebars.
With a 19” frame and integrated battery, the Connect has a sleek and agile look accentuated by features like the smooth welding on the frame and electric blue styling.
