The clocks have gone back and evenings are drawing in at an alarming pace. Winter IS coming. The hibernating season has arrived, comfort-eating, staying in and reaching for the remote is all too easy! It’s also easy to understand why you could be tempted to tuck the e-bike away and limit your outdoor travel.

We know some people can feel nervous about getting on an e-bike in the darker, colder months, but we also know the amazing benefits and joy to be had for those who venture out on two wheels throughout the winter. So here are a few (five) pointers to help you enjoy cycling with confidence throughout the winter months.

Cycling British streets during winter can feel daunting, but with a few simple precautions and the right mindset, riding an e-bike through the colder months can be safe, comfortable, and fun!

1. Choose the Right Gear for Warmth and Visibility

Winter cycling requires proper clothing. Layer up with moisture-wicking base layers, a warm, windproof jacket, and waterproof trousers to keep you dry. Gloves are essential to protect your hands from the cold, while a buff or scarf can help guard your neck and face against chilly winds.

Visibility is essential, especially as winter days are shorter, and you’ll often find yourself cycling in low light or darkness. Invest in bright, reflective gear and attach reflective strips to your bike and backpack. Strong front and rear lights are essential for being seen and seeing the road ahead. All VOLT electric bikes adorn strong bike lights as standard, but you can feel even more confident by adding additional lights to accessories like helmets and bags.

2. Prioritise Regular Bike Maintenance

E-bikes require regular upkeep, particularly in winter when rain, mud, and grit can build up, potentially affecting performance. Regular checks and maintenance not only keep you safe but also help you ride with confidence.

Clean your e-bike after rides to prevent mud and grime from damaging the chain and gears. Lubricate the chain regularly to keep it moving smoothly, and consider using a winter-specific lubricant, which is thicker and more resistant to water.

It’s also important to check your tyres frequently, as cold weather can cause air pressure to drop. Equally, overpumped tyres can offer less traction so ensure the air-pressure is within the recommended pressures (usually displayed on the side of the tyres).

3. Use Extra Caution on Slippery Surfaces

Winter roads can be unpredictable. Rain, frost, and even black ice make surfaces more challenging to navigate, so it’s essential to ride cautiously. Reduce your speed, especially on turns, to prevent skidding. Keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and try to anticipate the actions of other road users to avoid sudden braking or swerving.

If you do encounter icy patches, it’s best to roll straight over them without braking or turning. E-bike motors provide an extra boost, but they can also make it tempting to accelerate quickly. Avoid sudden power bursts, which can cause the wheels to lose traction on slippery surfaces.

4. Plan Your Route and Take Breaks

Planning your route can make a big difference to your winter e-bike experience. Opt for quieter streets and designated cycle paths where possible. Many towns and cities in the UK now have dedicated cycling lanes, which can help you feel more secure, especially in challenging weather conditions.

It’s also wise to give yourself extra time for your journey. This allows you to ride at a comfortable pace and take breaks if you feel cold or fatigued. Warming up in a cafe or sheltered area can make the ride more enjoyable and prevent your body from cooling down too much.

5. Embrace the Adventure

Finally, remember that winter e-biking can be fun! There’s a unique thrill to riding through crisp winter air, exploring quieter streets, and experiencing the UK’s landscapes in a different light. With the right mindset, winter cycling can become a source of enjoyment and discovery. Embrace the opportunity to explore new routes, take in the seasonal scenery, and enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes from braving the elements.

By preparing well, staying visible, and cycling mindfully, you can safely enjoy the freedom and exhilaration of winter e-biking on UK streets.
