Bristows Cycles Store Front

Bristows Cycles is an independent family business in Peterborough has been running since 1973, which makes this its 50th anniversary year! They’ve also been part of the VOLT family for over 8 years. What better excuse to get them under the spotlight for the latest dealer feature…

Bristow Cycles in the Spotlight

1. What motivated you to open/run a bicycle shop?

We are a family business that was started by David’s parents in 1973 and then David started working full-time in the business in 1981 when our current shop opened. Sheena started helping out part-time for several years, then due to family retirement, Sheena decided to join full-time from 2004. Our son Scott, now helps us out as well, so we have well and truly kept it in the family!

2. What makes your store different from others?

Our shop is located at a local parade of shops with plenty of quiet roads for ebike test rides. Directly opposite us is the lovely green area, with a beautiful church next to us as well. The route up to the shop is through a beautiful village with chocolate box thatched cottages. We even have some nice, short inclines close by to really test out the assistance. Plenty of free parking too!

3. Where is the best/favourite location you have ever cycled? Your favourite local one to cycle?

Our favoured area to cycle is Majorca, we have been there several times and the standout climb has to be Sa Calobra. Locally out through the villages into Northamptonshire and Rutland.

4. What is the funniest/strangest request you have ever had from a customer?

Do we sell de-ionised water for batteries?!!

5. What is your favourite poison?

Both of us love a cappuccino and Sheena also likes a drop of Baileys or Honey Rum.

6. What about the VOLT brand & range led you to stock them?

We had a visit from Volt about 8 years ago who let us have a bike to try in the shop and see what happens. Amazingly, we got a phone call the day after we had our first bike in the shop, and sold one there and then! We were impressed with the bikes and the quality of them, so decided we had nothing to lose by being a dealer. We have not looked back since.

7. What is your favourite VOLT e-bike and why?

The Metro LS because it suits so many people and as it folds it is so easy to put in the car and take anywhere. It is very popular with motorhome and caravan owners due to its size and practicality.

8. What is your top tip for anyone looking to buy an electric bike?

Research and more research, test ride both hub drive and crank drive bikes and buy a good quality brand that offers a great back-up for service and spares.
