Dealer Spotlight: Moons Cycles

With generations of bike shop experience in his family, it’s no wonder Moons Cycles’ leading man Mike decided to return to his roots and open up a shop of his own. Full of charm, character, history and stunning surroundings, it’s not hard to see why Mike chose Ipswich in Suffolk to set up shop!

Mike took ownership of Moons Cycles over five years ago and hasn’t looked back. With more than forty years experience in the saddle, the cyclists of Ipswich couldn’t be better looked after.

The feedback from Moons Cycles has been exceptional. So we wanted to find out a little more about this unique Bike Shop based in East Anglia…

1. What motivated you to open/run a bicycle shop?
   My mum suggested I buy a bike shop as she said it’s in my blood. Apparently my great grandfather had a shop in Whitechapel, and my mum and aunts all worked there. So I went shop hunting and eventually found Life Cycle in Ipswich, which I changed to Moons Cycles, which is what it was known as previously.
    
2. What sets your store apart from others?
   We have positioned ourselves as a family bike shop and treat everyone with the same degree of respect.
    
3. Who’s in your team, and what do they do?
   There are four of us. Myself as the front man; Alin the technical wizard, who has been with us for five years; and Will, who started as a Saturday boy five years ago and is now at university, but still works Saturdays and helps Alin. We are overseen by Sue, who runs the office and has also been with us for five years.
   
   
4. What about the VOLT™ brand range led you to stock them?
   Steve the VOLT™ rep visited us and suggested we give them a try. We thought he was daft—no one is going to buy an electric bike! How wrong we were. We’ve sold lots to all sorts of really nice people, mostly different from our regular customers, people who make a decision. So we have never looked back, really. 
    
5. What is your favourite VOLT™ e-bike and why?
   VOLT™ Pulse X is my favourite bike. It looks really good, performs very well and I want one for myself, even though I am a roadie and a mountain biker.
   
   
6. What’s your dream cycling location?
   The coastal road that runs next to the sea between Cape Town and Hermanus in the Western Cape of South Africa. Absolutely amazing! 
    
7. What has been your most rewarding customer experience?
   A customer with COPD bought a bike after much debate, and is now in much better health than previously thought possible. 
    
8. What is the funniest/strangest request you’ve ever had from a customer?
   We helped a customer put a race bike on the roof of his new Porsche!
    
9. What is your top tip for anyone looking to buy an electric bike?
