Founded in 2010, by the Summer of 2020, VOLT opened their ambitious Milton Keynes electric bike factory. The 20,000 square foot warehouse was sought to reshore e-bike production to the UK. In the backdrop of the pandemic lockdowns and Brexit negotiations, the move was as challenging as it was bold. Ten years on from that infamous vote, Financial Times’ sister fDi Intelligence reconnected with VOLT Director James Metcalfe to see what’s changed and what hasn’t…
Why We Brought E-Bike Production Back to Britain
When most manufacturers are looking overseas to reduce costs, bringing production back to the UK might seem like an unusual decision.
For VOLT, however, it was one of the most important decisions we’ve ever made.
The fDi Intelligence explored how VOLT became one of the UK’s leading e-bike brands and why our founders, brothers James and Lyle Metcalfe, chose to bring production home to Britain. It is a story that reflects not only the growth of electric bikes, but also the value of investing in local manufacturing, skilled jobs and long-term resilience.
Building More Than Bikes
VOLT began life in 2010, when electric bikes were still a rarity on British roads. What started as an idea to bring e-biking to London quickly evolved into something much bigger as nationwide demand took off.
As the business grew, production initially took place overseas. Like many manufacturers, we followed established supply chains and assembled our bikes where the necessary expertise and components were available.
But as global trade became increasingly uncertain, the business faced an important question.
Should we continue to rely on overseas production, or invest in building something closer to home?
A History of Bold Decisions
Years before reshoring became a widely discussed business strategy, VOLT made the decision to bring production to Britain.
The move was not driven by short-term savings. Instead, it was about creating stability, maintaining quality and gaining greater control over the manufacturing process. As James Metcalfe explained in the interview, predicting future tariffs and trade arrangements had become a growing business risk. Bringing production to Britain removed much of that uncertainty.
The result was a major investment in a new facility in Milton Keynes, giving VOLT the ability to assemble bikes in Britain while working more closely with suppliers and partners.
There is a growing appreciation for the value of making things closer to home.
Local production creates jobs, supports regional economies and reduces dependence on complex international supply chains. It also allows businesses to respond more quickly to customer needs and maintain closer oversight of quality.
For VOLT, British assembly means every bike benefits from the experience and attention of a dedicated team that understands the expectations of UK riders.
It is also an investment in skills. The UK has a proud manufacturing heritage and the transition towards greener forms of transport presents an opportunity to develop new expertise and create new jobs for the future.
Supporting Britain’s Cycling Future
The UK e-bike market has come a long way since VOLT first launched.
What was once viewed as a niche technology is now helping commuters, leisure riders and families travel further and more often by bike. Across the country, electric bikes are helping people replace car journeys, reduce emissions and enjoy a more active lifestyle.
Yet there is still enormous potential for growth.
Many European countries have embraced e-bikes as a mainstream form of transport, supported by investment in infrastructure and policies that encourage cycling. The UK is moving in the same direction, and businesses that invest in local manufacturing have an important role to play in that journey.
Bringing production back to Britain was never the easiest option, but it was the right one.
It reflected a belief that quality matters, that local expertise matters, and that building products closer to the people who use them creates a stronger and more resilient business.
As VOLT continues to grow, those principles remain unchanged.
Because building great e-bikes is about more than technology. It is about investing in people, supporting British manufacturing and helping create a future where more journeys are made on two wheels.
