Finding Freedom After Knee Surgery: Dave’s E-bike Journey

Some people buy an ebike. Dave bought a VOLT, and then spent the next few years telling everyone he knows to do the same. Here’s his story… 

Keeping Up with the Grandkids on an Electric Bike

Dave lives in the lovely Welsh town of Abergavenny. Back in 2018, he was after a good folding bike and did what most of us do first: he went online and had a look around. But it was a visit to Williams Cycles that made up his mind.

“The crew in Williams Cycles knew what they were talking about,” Dave says. “They weren’t just salespeople, they were bikers.”

He’d spotted a VOLT in the shop and asked for a try. They said yes. A couple of minutes around the block was all it took.

“I left the wife in the shop as a deposit,” he laughs. “He said, ‘I can get one in by next Tuesday.’ I said, ‘Fine, here’s my card.’ And that was it. I’ve been a VOLT owner ever since.”

The right bike at the right time

Dave bought his VOLT just before he was due to have knee surgery, and he wanted something that would get him back out and about once he’d recovered. A low-step through frame made all the difference.

“Getting across a crossbar was a bit awkward with the knee,” he explains, “hence the low step.”

At the time, Dave was working at the local hospital, and the folding frame earned its keep straight away.

“I cycled to work and from work every day. Fold it up and keep it under my desk.”

Freedom, family and the odd trip to France

Now retired, Dave’s VOLT has become part of family life. With two grandchildren to keep up with, the folder goes straight in the back of the car, alongside their bikes, for days out on the local cycleway.

“We’ve got a caravan, so the folder is great,” he says. “It’s been to France. It’s been everywhere.”

For Dave, it comes down to one word: freedom.

Spreading the word

Dave’s enthusiasm hasn’t stayed within the family. He’s since recommended ebikes to friends, who now own two VOLTs between them, a Metro and a Metro LS.

And the recommendations haven’t stopped there. Dave’s brother-in-law has just moved to the UK from America, and Dave already knows what he’ll be telling him.
