If you’ve ever watched “national treasure” Rustie Lee on television, you’ll know her infectious laugh, boundless energy and unmistakable warmth. But behind that famous smile is a story of resilience, determination and choosing joy, even on the difficult days.

Mr Motivator & Rustie Lee on Laughter, Life and Living with Pain

In the latest episode of On Your Bike, Mr Motivator visits the beloved TV personality for what starts as an attempt to get her cycling on a VOLT electric bike. Rustie quickly and hilariously admits that riding a bike isn’t quite as easy as she remembered!

After plenty of laughter, the pair retreats to Rustie’s beautiful garden, where the conversation turns to something much deeper. Together they explore health, happiness, chronic pain, life’s setbacks and why laughter really can be one of the best medicines.

Now approaching the end of the first series of On Your Bike, following memorable conversations with guests including Jeremy Vine and Levi Roots, the series continues to uncover the personal stories behind some of Britain’s best-loved personalities.

Finding Joy Every Day

One of the first things that becomes clear is Rustie’s remarkable outlook on life.

When asked whether she’s always as cheerful as she appears on television, her answer is simple.

“I don’t stay sad for long.”

It’s not because life has always been easy. Quite the opposite.

Rustie explains that over the years she’s experienced disappointment, criticism and heartbreak, but she’s learned that dwelling on negativity only hurts the person carrying it.

Instead, every morning begins with the same promise to herself.

“I’m going to have a great day today.”

It’s a simple mindset, but one that has helped shape the optimism millions have come to know and love.

Even the everyday frustrations of supermarket self-checkouts become moments to laugh about.

For Rustie, finding something to smile about every single day isn’t just part of her personality. It’s a conscious choice.

The Story Behind the Success

Many people know Rustie Lee as one of Britain’s most recognisable TV chefs.

What many don’t realise is that cooking wasn’t where her career began.

She reveals that she first made her name as a singer, performing in clubs across the UK and internationally before appearing in major stage productions and eventually becoming a familiar face on British television.

Later, following her father’s advice to “get a proper job”, she trained as a master baker at Birmingham’s College of Food, adding another impressive string to her bow.

It’s another reminder that overnight success rarely happens overnight.

As Mr Motivator puts it perfectly,

“People see the glory, but they don’t know the story.”

Behind every successful career are years of hard work, setbacks and persistence.

Living With Pain

Perhaps the most moving part of the conversation comes when Rustie speaks openly about her health.

Despite her positive attitude, she reveals that she lives with chronic pain every day.

After undergoing four hip replacements and dealing with serious spinal problems, pain has become a constant companion.

Yet she refuses to let it define her.

“I’m not going to let it rule me. I’m going to rule it.”

Rather than allowing her condition to stop her from enjoying life, Rustie focuses on what she can control.

She speaks honestly about using prescribed medication when necessary while also embracing natural remedies, gentle movement and maintaining a positive mindset.

Mr Motivator gently reinforces the importance of regular exercise, not as a cure, but as one of many tools that can help people maintain mobility and well-being.

It’s an important reminder that staying active looks different for everyone.

Learning to Let Go

The conversation also touches on one of the most difficult periods of Rustie’s life: her divorce.

She describes how she consciously chose not to allow pain and disappointment to define the rest of her future.

Her advice is both compassionate and practical.

If we spend all our energy holding onto what’s gone, we often miss the opportunities waiting ahead.

It’s another example of the optimism that runs through everything she says. Not blind positivity, but a deliberate decision to keep moving forward.

Celebrating Our Differences

Towards the end of the episode, the conversation broadens into community, culture and kindness.

Rustie reflects on her Jamaican heritage, the richness of Caribbean traditions and the importance of understanding one another.

Her closing message is one of the most memorable of the series so far.

She compares humanity to a garden filled with many different flowers.

Every flower is different.

Every flower has its own beauty.

And together they make the garden complete.

It’s a fitting way to end an episode filled with warmth, wisdom and plenty of laughter.
