BLOG electric bike questions Buying an E-bike for 2026? The questions you need to answer before buying

Thinking about buying an electric bike, but not sure where to start? You’re not alone — here are some of the most important questions you need to ask before taking the plunge into e-biking.
Battery: Weight vs Range vs Safety
(Battery) Safety First…
E-bike safety has, rightly, been at the forefront of the media in recent times and our directors have been active in the call for clearer, safer guidelines within the industry. We ensure we only partner with highly trusted and reputable brands from manufacturers like Panasonic who we use for our batteries. All our e-bikes are stringently tested to the strictest standards and we’re working hard to deliver not only the highest standards within our own range but for the industry as a whole.
How heavy is the battery and how far can I ride on a single charge?
Batteries and the range they offer are a crucial consideration before buying any power-assisted bicycle. At VOLT we’ve always taken pride in leading the charge (pun intended!) for that perfect balance between battery size and performance.
That balance is reflected throughout the VOLT range, from our Folding Electric Bikes designed to be lightweight and convenient, delivering an impressive yet shorter range (30-50 miles) to our Hybrid E-bikes that are crafted to provide longer journeys over mixed terrains (60-80+ miles).
Performance & Ride Feel
How fast can an e-bike go?
In the UK and EU, e-bikes assist you up to 15.5 mph (25 km/h). Faster speeds are possible, but only under your own pedalling power!
Can I ride without using the motor?
Yes — you can switch the motor off and ride it like a normal bike. Volt e-bikes deliver highly sophisticated and intuitive power assistance and allow you to choose how much effort you feel like putting in.
Will it get me up hills?
Absolutely — the motor makes hills and headwinds much easier, even with your weekly shop in tow.
What’s the difference between pedal assist and throttle?
- Pedal assist: The motor helps when you pedal, feeling natural and smooth.
- Throttle (where legal): You can power the bike without pedalling.
Design & Comfort
What type of e-bike should I choose?
It depends on your needs:
- Commuter/City: For daily rides to work.
- Folding: Great for storage and public transport.
- Classic/Step Through: Perfect for hopping on and off with ease
- Hybrid: Ideal for longer journeys over mixed terrain
- eMTB: Great for longer adventures off-road
How heavy are e-bikes?
Usually 18–25 kg (40–55 lbs) — heavier than a normal bike, but the motor makes that weight vanish when riding!
Do they feel like a normal bike to ride?
Yes — you still pedal, steer, and brake as normal, just with an extra boost. Some people describe it like having a gentle push as you ride.
Cost & Value
How much do e-bikes cost?
Like everything in life, you get what you pay for. Expect £1,000–£3,000 for a quality model. Higher-end bikes offer bigger batteries, lighter frames, and extra features.
Are they worth the investment?
Most riders say yes, while most naysayers turn to evangelists once they’re in the saddle themselves! They save money on fuel, parking, and increasing public transport tickets, while making journeys easier, freer and more fun.
Can I get help with the cost?
Yes — in the UK you can use the Cycle to Work scheme and other incentives.
Maintenance & Reliability
Do e-bikes need more maintenance?
Electric Bike maintenance, for the most part, is the same as a regular bicycle. The only extras are looking after the battery and electrics, which can be a lot simpler than people realise. Volt Bikes are all about making the power-assisted cycle experience as simple as possible, minimising cables and components while streamlining ergonomics. Since our launch 15 years ago, our 2-year peace of mind warranty has been a stalwart promise to our 20,000+ customers.
What if the electrics go wrong?
Good brands (like us) have nationwide service networks, and many bike shops can handle e-bike repairs.
Are spare parts easy to find?
Yes — especially for established manufacturers.
Legal & Safety
Do I need a licence or insurance?
No — in the UK, standard e-bikes (250W motor, 15.5 mph limit) are treated as normal bicycles. No licence, insurance, or tax required.
Do I need to wear a helmet?
Not by law in the UK, but it’s strongly recommended.
Can I use cycle paths?
Yes — e-bikes are allowed wherever normal bicycles can go.
Lifestyle & Everyday Use
Can an e-bike replace my car?
For many people, yes — especially for commuting, shopping, and short trips.
Are e-bikes good for fitness?
Yes — you still pedal, so you get exercise, but at a level that suits you. Perfect if you want to ride further without overdoing it.
Are e-bikes eco-friendly?
Much more so than cars — they cut emissions, reduce congestion, improve air quality and use very little electricity to charge.
Can I ride in the rain?
Yes — e-bikes are designed to handle normal UK weather. Just don’t submerge the battery!
In short: e-bikes are fun, practical, eco-friendly, and can make cycling part of your daily life — whether you’re commuting, exploring, or just enjoying the ride.
