VOLT Stories: “A Very Human Company” – Bob’s E-bike Journey

Bob Volt Burlington ebike journey

For many people, switching to an electric bike starts with a question: Will it really work for me? For Bob, that question was all about hills.

Living and working in High Wycombe, surrounded by terrain that’s anything but flat, Bob admits he wasn’t convinced an e-bike would be up to the job.

I personally wasn’t convinced that a bike would make light work of the hills around here — but I’m glad to say that this does.

Four years and over 4,000 miles later, his VOLT e-bike has become something far more than an experiment. It’s his vehicle of choice.

One Car, One Bike, A Better Balance

Bob’s journey into e-bikes began with a simple lifestyle decision. Rather than running two cars — with one mostly sitting idle on the drive — he and his household decided to downsize to just one.

That’s when he started looking seriously at cycling for everyday transport, using the Cycle to Work scheme through his employer and searching for a trusted local supplier.

He found that in Cycle Care, High Wycombe

They’ve been absolutely brilliant — helping me test ride the bike, servicing it, and even helping me slightly out of hours to keep me on the road.

For Bob, that support has mattered.

An Electric Bike Built for Real Life

Today, Bob uses his Pulse LS e-bike primarily for commuting — but it doesn’t stop there.

Local trips, popping to the shops, and even getting to parkrun are all part of the mix.

It’s a 25-minute run from my house, or a 10-minute gentle cycle on my bike.

What stands out most is reliability.

I like the fact that it’s really reliable. It’s comfortable to ride. I’ve done 4,400 miles in four years and it’s never let me down. It’s a brilliant piece of equipment.

That dependability is exactly what makes it viable as an alternative to the car — not just for special journeys, but everyday ones.

Conquering the Hills (Without the Sweat)

One of the biggest reasons Bob chose an electric bike over a conventional one was simple: sweat.

I live on one hill, I work on another. I could never get to work without being sweaty — whether I walked, ran, or cycled on a normal bike.

With electric assist, that changed completely.

It’s a great bike getting me to work totally fresh in the morning, having taken in the sights of High Wycombe on the way.

What once felt intimidating now feels effortless — and enjoyable.

A Very Human Company

When asked if he’d recommend VOLT, Bob doesn’t hesitate. But it’s not just about the bike.

Given the experience I’ve had with Cycle Care — who have been a brilliant mouthpiece for VOLT — and the experience I’ve had with you guys when I’ve had to talk to you… yes, I most definitely would.

And then comes the line that sums it all up.

You’re a very human company, and you are interested in keeping me on the road.

For us, that’s exactly what VOLT Stories are about: real people, real journeys, and electric bikes that quietly become part of everyday life.
