The sun is shining, spring is in the air and the pigeon post has created a sense of hubbub over the morning coffees at Volt HQ. After several months of patiently waiting, crossing fingers and constant email checking, the results are finally in…
And we are over the moon to have received the prestigious 2022 Red Dot Bicycle Design Award for our new Volt London urban e-bike.
Back in February last year we teased newsletter subscribers with sketches of our first ever single-speed electric bike. Accompanied by a Volt London blog post, the concept was to not only mark our tenth year in electric bike production but also mark the progression towards even better-looking bikes with unmatched performance. Something that is now also demonstrated in the latest incarnation of bikes, like the Volt Pulse and Burlington.
This award comes as the chocolate sprinkles to what’s been an incredible start to our 11th year; and not only confirms that we‘re on the right path but keeps us inspired to carry on designing, building and evolving.
This city-inspired ebike isn’t just catching the eye of international jurors though, in a recent review, revered design magazine Wallpaper were also spotted waxing lyrical about it in ‘The E-bike With a Twist of Style’, quoting…
“a refined take on a classic city bicycle”
The single-speed e-bike is Volt’s latest machine to traverse city landscapes and specifically made for the urban rider, its design draws inspiration from the needs of riders on the streets of the UK’s capital. From commuting to exploring the Volt London is ideal for tackling the urban environment.
Red Dot is an international design competition that highlights world-leading products with outstanding design at their heart. With an average of 18,000 submissions every year, the jury reviews products from designers, companies and organizations of over 70 nations. With this year’s highest and record number of submissions, the Volt London was selected as the Bicycle Design winner 2022. Commenting on the award win, Prof. Dr Peter Zec, Founder of Red Dot said:
“Our international jury assessed a considerable number of products this year, as a record number of companies and design studios once again faced the professional judgment of our experts… the fact you emerged victorious from such a strong group of participants is testimony to the extraordinary quality of your product.”
The now award-winning electric cycle is set to launch to the public on May 5th, Volt founder and owner, James Metcalfe commented:
“This award illustrates the hard work and attention to detail our whole team puts into the design of each and every VOLT bike and we’re honored that the design of the Volt London, our 10-year anniversary model, has been recognised by the prestigious Red Dot Awards.”
“With the London we set out to achieve a simple and sleek design that emulates the popular style of a single speed ‘fixie’ bike but delivers the power and performance of a conventional e-bike. This award acknowledges the effort everyone puts in to ensure that we created an all-round urban e-bike that delivers everything the city rider would need. We’re incredibly excited to see what our customers think when we launch it on May 5th.”
With e-bikes often labelled as prioritizing practicalities over aesthetics, this world-leading accolade demonstrates that Volt is leading the way when it comes to e-bike design.
